 In Community News

The National Black Contractors Association and the NAACP San Diego Branch Salutes the Enduring Legacy of Medger Evers.

We endeavor to salute Medgar Evers’ historic achievements in the civil rights arena by presenting a “Life Time Achievement Award” to his equally accomplished wife, Dr. Myrlie Evers-Williams, for keeping his legacy alive. This event will be open to the community on November 10, 2011 – 5:30 p.m. at the BCA located at 6125 Imperial Ave San Diego, Ca 92114.

The U.S. Navy will be commissioning a ship bearing his name to honor his service to America, the civil rights struggle and humanity, which is a must see historic event open to the public. The USNS Medgar Evers will be a new dry cargo and ammunition ship and added to the fleet of vessels that traverse the world and protect our freedom. The primary mission of the USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE 13) will be to deliver more than 10,000 tons of food, ammunition, fuel and other provisions to combat ships on the move at sea.

On Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 9:00 am, there will be a public christening of the USNS Medgar Evers at General Dynamics NAASCO, located at 2798 East Harbor Drive (28th Street and East Harbor Drive) San Diego, CA 92113.

Medgar Evers was the field secretary for the NAACP when he was assassinated on 06/12/63. We owe a debt of gratitude to the life and work of Medgar Evers and his family for keeping his work alive.
