New York Times bestselling author Nikki Grimes is the recipient of the 2006 NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children. The author of more than 45 books for kids, Grimes has also received the Coretta Scott King Award and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work. Grimes will read from her book, Rich: A Dyamonde Daniel book. Third grader Dyamonde is excited about the local library’s poetry contest. After the contest she makes a new friend and her ideas about what it means to be rich or poor begin to change.

This Book-to-Action program is sponsored by the California Center for the Book and provided in partnership with the Black Storytellers of San Diego. Materials are funded by an LSTA grant and Express Luggage. Refreshments from locally grown produce will be prepared by Chef Pam Banks of Comfort Catering.
