How Do I Start or Manage a Community Garden?

Do you want to learn how to start or manage a community garden? Healthy Works can help.
As part of the Healthy Works School and Community Gardens Program, five agencies across the County have been selected as Regional Garden Education Centers (RGEC), community-based hubs for garden education and training. These sites offer free public courses in the areas of:
- Gardening 101: How to Grow Your Own Food
- Gardening 201: How to Start and Manage a Community Garden
- Gardening 301: How to Start and Sustain a School Garden
Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center, the Healthy Works South Regional RGEC site, is currently hosting Gardening 201: How to Start and Manage a Community Garden: http://olivewoodgardens.org/education/gardening-201. This two-session course is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 and Saturday, July 23 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. The course offers six lessons on the fundamentals of community garden organizing and management, including: asset-based community development, finding and obtaining land, budgeting and fundraising, garden design and supplies, day to day operations, and how to be a good neighbor. Individuals unable to attend the first session are welcome to register and attend the second session on Saturday, July 23 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
