The 1st Annual Jihmye Collins Memorial End of Summer Poetry Camp: Camp Collins

For 10 Students Ages 14-18 From Southeast San Diego

Ten teenagers from Southeast San Diego will receive scholarships to participate in an end of summer poetry camp, Camp Collins, with local poet Jim Moreno. Jim was brought on board the San Diego Writers, Ink Program Committee this year to outreach to young and adult writers in Southeast San Diego. Camp Collins will be in session from Aug. 25 to Aug. 29th from 2:00 P.M. To 5:00 P.M. Writing skills, performance skills, and microphone skills will be taught followed by a poetry reading for parents and the community at the Malcolm X Library Performance Annex, on Sunday, August 31, 2014 @ 2:00 P.M. By Camp Collins Poets. Community Service hours are available to participants.  The students’ poems will also be considered for publication in the San Diego Poetry Annual.

 Jim Moreno is on the Advisory Board of the Poetic Medicine Institute of Palo Alto, California and a Regional Editor of the San Diego Poetry Annual. He is a Teaching Artist with Young Audiences of San Diego and the Point Loma Arts Academy. Jim is the Resident Poet for the Juvenile Court & Community Schools and was an original member of the Langston Hughes Poetry Circle. Moreno is the author of “Dancing In Dissent”, (Dolphin Calling Press, 2007) and two cd’s of music and poetry.
